Trying time for relatives
The relatives of those injured in the Samjhauta train blasts are facing a harrowing time.
 INDIA , 21-February-2007  1:52:9 AM
When a symbol of peace like the Samjhauta Express becomes a target of terror, it's even more painful and shocking.

Most of the relatives have been camping outside the burns ward of the Safdarjung Hospital in the Capital.

United in grief

NDTV spent 24 hours with these people on Tuesday and it was heartening to see citizens of both countries unite to help each other in this moment of grief.

Vipin, who is from Jaipur, drove his neighbours all the way from there to see their relative Mohd Shakeel, who was visiting from Pakistan.

"Just because I am a neighbour, does not mean my responsibility is any less," said Vipin.

The VIPs weren't far behind. On Tuesday morning, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi paid a visit and so did Union Foreign Minister Pranab Mukhejee.

The day turned to evening and the VIP visits continued. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri paid a visit and the night brought Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the hospital.

Battling for life

However, these visits did little to console those in grief. Sultana Begum's day started with the news of her nephew Md Harish's death.

On Monday, her brother Md Shafiq also died while her nephew, nine-year-old Mohd Shamim, is battling for life with 40 per cent burn injuries.

"My nephews are orphaned. I am their only close relative here," she said.

Mohd Zikar from Buldana in Maharashtra is searching for his cousin Mohd Haroon, a Pakistani national who was on the ill-fated train. "I have come here first, hoping for some news," said Zikar.

But there was no luck for Zikar as Haroon's name was not on the injured list. So he has now left for Panipat.

Act of kindness

As the relatives braced for their second night outside the burns ward, tents and food were provided, not by the hospital staff, but by Ashok Randhawa.
