Cultural festival kicks off in Chennai

A new cultural festival called the Chennai Sangamam has opened in the city.
As the name suggests, the Chennai Sangamam will bring together the old and the new for an extravaganza that is big even by Chennai's culturally active standards.
For the next five days, there will no tickets and no passes, as concert halls, parks and even the beach will turn into a platform for artists to perform.
And with rock concerts, film screenings, lectures, dramas, dances and carnatic music, the festival has something to offer for everyone.
"Art and music will be coming to you. You don't have to go in search of it," said Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi's daughter.
People's participation
While the state government has thrown its weight behind the project in the first year, the organisers are hoping that the festival goes forward through the participation of people.
And it seems as though artists both big and small were just waiting for something like this to happen.
"Everybody felt that we are part of it and that we want to do something. That was the interesting finding and revelation of the whole process," said Rev Jegath Gasper Raj, MD, Goodwill Communications Ltd.
Over the next few years, Chennai Sangamam will seek to become something like the Rio carnival.
It aims to become an event that is strongly branded with a city and a venue for the nearly 74 million Tamil-speaking people in the world to converge and share their common cultural identity.
