Longer power cuts in Maharashtra
Manish Suryawanshi from Bhiwandi is appearing for his HSC board exams.
 INDIA , 22-February-2007  1:33:41 AM
Ahead of the peak summer when things are likely to be thrown out of gear, the Power Regulatory Authority has ordered longer power cuts to deal with the shortage.

Manish Suryawanshi from Bhiwandi is appearing for his HSC board exams.

His family has been living with nine hour power cuts for more than a year and now there is more bad news.

For the third time in 15 days, the Maharashtra State Electricity distribution company or MSEDC will increase the duration of power cuts.

In urban areas, six-eight hour power cuts will become eight-ten hours long. In rural areas, the 10-12 hour power cuts will become 15 hours long.

Demand v/s supply

The power distribution company says this is being done under orders from the MERC of the 5,500 MW gap between demand and supply.

"The MERC is a quasi judicial body. If they pass an order, then we have to abide by it. We are simply implementing," said Dr Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Chairperson, MSEDC.

Many say decades of mismanagement in the power sector is responsible. People say they are paying the price for the state's neglect of power production.

There is of course some hope in the MERC order.

"As of now there is a shortfall of 5500 MW, but even if 100 MW's is available to the grid then correspondingly power cuts will also be reduced," said Pramod Deo, Chairperson, MERC.

Area wise

But for now, the power cuts are on and they will be implemented area wise.

The state has been divided into four zones, those paying less and reporting greater losses of power will face the most severe cut.

In a way, the authorities are saying that except for Mumbai city, the rest of Maharashtra better get used to dealing with power cuts.

And If you want to reduce the duration of power cuts, not only do you have to pay your own bill but make sure that your neighbours are paying theirs - the onus in a way is now on the consumer.
