| The foundation stone for the much-awaited 100 million litres desalination plant at Kattupalli near Minjur was laid on Sunday.
Participating in the function, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said the plant would provide a permanent solution to Chennai's growing water needs.
He requested the organisations involved in the project to complete the project in the stipulated period, by June 2008. He said the cost of water per kilolitre was brought down to Rs. 48.66. Thus, about Rs.1.80 crore was saved, Mr. Stalin said.
The Rs.1,000-crore grant for the desalination plant announced by Union Minister P. Chidambaram earlier would be used for the 100 mld desalination plant to be set up on Old Mahabalipuram Road. Citing the water drought period between 2001 and 2004, Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran said the desalination plant would be a perennial source of water supply, lowering dependence on monsoon and water resources.
Shiv Das Meena, managing director of Chennai Metrowater, said about Rs.93 crore was sought under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for distribution of water through pipeline via Madhavaram and Red Hills.
