A passenger oriented rail budget
Lalu announces more trains
 INDIA , 27-February-2007  0:52:30 AM
Living up to his promise of presenting a "good budget," Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Monday slashed upper class fares up to eight per cent, effected a token reduction of a rupee in second class ordinary fares, and reduced freight rates on diesel, petrol, minerals and ores while refraining from an across-the-board freight hike.

Presenting the Railway budget for 2007-08 in Parliament, Mr. Prasad announced the introduction of 40 new trains, including eight air-conditioned "Garib Raths." He announced the route extension of 23 trains and an increase in frequency of 14 others.

A total of 800 more coaches would be attached to popular trains, all unreserved second-class coaches would get upholstered seats, and their number would be increased from four to six in all new trains. Reduction in e-ticket charges for sleeper and air-conditioned (AC) classes from Rs. 25 to Rs. 15 and Rs. 40 to Rs. 20 was also announced.

"A record"

Presenting his fourth consecutive railway budget, Mr. Prasad said he had set a record of not raising passenger fares.

In a bid to woo traffic from low-cost airlines, he announced a reduction in fares in the AC first class by three per cent in the busy season and six per cent in the lean season.

The reduced rates would be two per cent and four per cent in AC two-tier.

Also, candidates appearing for the main written examination by the Staff Selection Commission and the Union Public Service Commission can now avail themselves of 50 per cent concession.

A reduction in fares would also be effected in all classes of high-capacity newly designed coaches, which would be four per cent in the busy season and eight per cent in the lean season in AC three-tier and AC chair car classes, and four per cent in all seasons in the sleeper class.

Mr. Prasad also announced a reduction of superfast charge on second-class tickets from Rs. 10 to Rs. 8.
