Quattrocchi released on bail
Ironically, Quattrocchi was already out on bail last Friday when news of his detention broke in India.
 INDIA , 27-February-2007  0:59:54 AM
Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors case, has been freed on bail in Argentina but will have to stay in the country.

Ironically, Quattrocchi was already out on bail last Friday when news of his detention broke in India.

The 20-year-old controversy, which returned to make headlines, following Quattrocchi's detention in Argentina on February 6 has now only deepened.

For the last three days, the government has been accused of covering up Quattrocchi's detention even though it knew about it for 17 days.

The CBI however maintains that it is following the case in the right earnest and that its team will reach Argentina on March 2.

"We have received the information of his release and are pursuing the case. Someone has been appointed in Argentina," said Vijay Shankar, Director, CBI.

The Argentinean government meanwhile has appointed an Advocate, Carlos Guillermo as counsel for Government of India in the extradition proceedings.

Raging controversy

Questions are being asked about why the investigating agency had kept Quattrocchi's detention a secret for so long.

The UPA government, already under attack on several fronts including inflation and price rise, finds itself completely isolated now. Even its ally the Left has described the handling of the entire Quattrocchi incident as "shocking".

The BJP is also crying foul, accusing the government and the Congress party of being key players in the cover-up.

"It's a cover-up by the Congress. We will take it up in Parliament," said Ravi Shankar Prasad, Spokesperson, BJP.

The Congress on its part is seeking to build distance with the raging controversy.

"We have nothing to do with the CBI," said Janardhan Dwivedi, General Secretary, AICC.

Clearly the controversy is far from over and will haunt the government throughout the Budget Session and beyond.
