| In Chennai, a Rs 500 crore desalination project will be ready next year to supply hundred million litres of drinking water everyday.
Although Chennai requires more than a thousand million litres of water per day, just around 600 MLD is being supplied now.
The project is expected to improve drinking water supply in the city, particularly during times of drought.
Conceived by the previous AIADMK government, the project was caught in a political tussle.
Political tussle
The Environmental Ministry headed by the DMK's Raja had earlier denied clearance to the project. It, however, became a priority for the DMK after it captured power.
"Although the AIADMK brought this scheme first, they did nothing to effectively execute it," claimed MK Stalin, Minister, Local Administration.
"It costs just around four paise per litre and the technology and subsidised power supply has made this possible," added Sudhir Reddy, Managing Director, IVRCL.
While Tamil Nadu's irrigation needs are often at the mercy of its neighbouring states, desalination has also offered a ray of hope for farmers.
The state government is exploring irrigation by desalination, replicating a working model in Spain.
