| The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the disproportionate assets case against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Besides the CM, the apex court directed probe against his MP son Akhilesh Yadav, wife Dimple and other son Prateek.
A Bench headed by Justice A R Lakshmanan said that the CBI will scrutinise the documents and decide if a case is made out against them or not.
"The allegation is made against the Chief Minister of a big state which has cast cloud on his integrity. Hence, it is in his interest and also to hold public morality in high offices that an independent agency should look into it," the Bench said.
The petition, filed by a Congress worker Vishwanath Chaturvedi, said that when Yadav became the CM for the first time in 1989 his assets were less than Rs 1.3 crore.
It further says that during his tenure he acquired wealth amounting to over Rs 100 crore.
Mulayam's lawyers have argued that these allegations are politically motivated. (With PTI inputs)
