Nod for 6 grade separators
A cyclist forced to use the footpath along the crowded Adyar Tiru Vi Ka bridge on Thursday. A proposed parallel bridge is set to ease traffic
 INDIA , 2-March-2007  2:37:19 AM
More than a year after official orders were passed, the State Government has cleared the construction of six grade separators and three bridges to ease traffic congestion in the city. Detailed project reports under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan with an outlay of Rs. 207 crore will be submitted soon. The Highways Department will start work in the next six months.

The intersections where grade separators have been cleared are Vyasarpadi, Vadapalani, Tirumangalam, Moolakkadai, Porur and Velachery.

A key decongestion measure proposed is to build another bridge alongside the Thiru-vi-Ka bridge at Adyar. Overbridges are planned at Ennore and Mogappair.

However, official sources say the projects got delayed due to uncertainty surrounding the adoption of a mass transportation system for the city.

With a metro rail project replacing the monorail project, city planners had to define the space for the elevated tracks along the medians while planning the grade separators.

For example, while building the grade separator at the Anna Salai-Sardar Patel Road junction, nearly 10 metres had to be earmarked for the rail corridor.

The multi-layered separator, officials said, would start from in front of Chellammal College on Anna Salai to branch off into Velachery Main road and Sardar Patel road towards Raj Bhavan. This should reduce the peak- hour traffic pile-up at the spot.

An Anna University study commissioned by the Government identified the stretch from Chellammal College to the Madhya Kailash temple as "highly congested" — vehicles spend an average of six minutes at the Chellammal College junction.

However, another proposal to construct a grade separator at the Madhya Kailash junction has hit a roadblock with various institutions refusing to part with land, said officials.
