| The dawn-to-dusk Jharkhand bandh on Monday, called by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and supported by all major political parties, in protest against the killing of the party's Member of Parliament, Sunil Kumar Mahato, was total and peaceful.
There were stray incidents of stone-throwing and blocking of roads at various places in the State, including Gamariah, where Mr. Mahato's residence is situated.
The bandh was near total in Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh and Dhanbad, official sources said.
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, M.S. Bhatia, told PTI that there were traffic jams at a few places in the city, but the bandh was incident-free.
Train services were badly hit in Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Pakur and other places while the Grand Trunk road wore a deserted look. Long distance buses also did not ply.
Though most educational institutions were closed, secondary board examinations went on as scheduled.
Emergency services such as hospitals and water were exempted from the bandh.
Office ransacked
Bandh supporters ransacked the reservation office at the Tatanagar railway station, S.K. Ahirwar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Chakradharpur Division, South Eastern Railway, said.
