| When it becomes fully operational this August, the IT corridor from Madhya Kailash to Siruseri will no longer be plagued by monsoon inundation, the bane of this stretch for long.
Designed as a part of the environmental management plan being put together by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC), the revised drainage proposal will provide for better passage of stormwater.
"The unprecedented flooding of the expressway during the heavy downpour two years ago made us take a second look at the drainage requirements. Every part of the 20-km corridor was carefully reviewed and a new drainage plan is being worked out, which will be ready in two months," K.R. Viswanathan, Director-in-charge, TNRDC, told The Hindu .
The new design will be based on a grid of cross ducts and culverts leading to natural drainage points and then the Buckingham Canal.
Complexes along the corridor will link up their drainage systems to the lead-up drains, and the entire grid will be integrated to eliminate any possibility of stagnation.
A self-sustaining greening component is included. Its cost, at initial estimates, works out to Rs 1.5 crore for the first 3 km, with Rs. 40 lakh to landscape the first 2 km. Of the 383 trees that initially lined the stretch, 123 have been retained and 145 have been transplanted on the premises of institutions along the corridor such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology.
A total area of 4,000 sqm will be landscaped.
