| Residents of the southern suburbs of Chennai are clamouring for an immediate solution to the problem of stray dogs, after a 4-year-old child was chased and bitten by a pack of dogs in Guduvanchery this week.
Coming in the backdrop of recent deaths of children in Bangalore following stray dog attacks, the incident involving T. Aravind, a kindergarten student in Guduvanchery, has residents worried.
Aravind was attacked on Monday when he was returning from school. The dogs pushed him to the ground and bit him on his abdomen and hands, before residents came to his rescue. He was administered first-aid and has been under bed rest since.
B. Velu, secretary of the Kancheepuram district youth wing of Pattali Makkal Katchi, said the bigger City Corporations may have succeeded in controlling the stray dog menace, but smaller local bodies such as village panchayats were still facing the problem.
The issue now routinely dominates meetings of councils of town panchayat municipalities.
The State Government recently announced funds to control the menace. Officials have said the amount would be used for animal birth control measures.
The Animal Welfare and Protection Trust, which runs a free animal shelter, will meet chiefs and elected representatives of village panchayats to highlight the importance of birth control measures for dogs. They insist that killing dogs was not the solution.
