| The mercury plunged in Srinagar following fresh snowfall in the upper reaches and incessant rains in the plains across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Jammu-Srinagar highway, which is known as the lifeline of the northern state, is closed for the second day after landslides at Panthal.
The sudden drop in the temperature was attributed to western disturbances over the border state, prompting people to take out their woollens once again.
But there were mixed reactions to the unseasonal snow and rain.
"It is good for the people who have land. Snow is good for the crops and for apples. Rivers and canals will be replenished, we will not suffer water shortage," said a local.
"The roads get flooded with water. It is so difficult to go to school and they must shut them during snowfall," said another local.
Meanwhile, five pilgrims have died due to the cold at Adakwari on route to the Vasihno Devi shrine, and 10 people there have been admitted to the hospital for cold-related illnesses.
