| All-India Congress Committee general secretary and Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha V. Narayanasamy has called upon the Rangasamy-led Government here to jettison immediately the plans to set up a satellite town and a deep sea port at Thengaithittu near here.
In a release here on Monday, he said AICC leader Sonia Gandhi had pointed out in no uncertain terms that fertile agricultural lands that were the main source of livelihood of farmers and farm labourers should never be acquired. In fact, they should be protected.
But the Puducherry administration had come out with a proposal to acquire hundreds of acres of fertile farmlands at Arumbathapuram, Manaveli, and Odianpet in the Oulgaret limits and at Kombakkam in the Mudaliarpet constituency.
This would inflict poverty on farmers, farm labourers and also on those raising three crops a year for generations together.
He said the government was going ahead with its acquisition plan to get a 247-acre site for the port. Already, farmers and villagers of the villages were up in arms against the government.
The AICC general secretary said he had surveyed the environment in villages where the satellite town had been planned.
It would be a mistake to create a satellite town in a place where the population was dense.
The villages would become more congested, as vehicular movement would also increase.
