| President A P J Abdul Kalam is all set to retire this July.
Even though the UPA government is not seriously considering the President for a second term, it is keen to give him a farewell gift by doubling his salary to Rs 1 lakh.
The Vice President and state governors will also get a similar pay hike.
Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, whose salary is higher than the President's since he is also a Rajya Sabha member, will get a salary of Rs 85000.
State governors will get a salary of Rs 75,000, up from Rs 35,000.
The new salaries will be effective from January 1 this year. The two proposals however will have to be ratified by the cabinet and the Parliament.
Office order
The justification for the over 100 per cent hike is to bring these salaries at par with MPs salaries and allowances which were increased last year.
The Home Ministry was also keen to bring the allowances and perks of former prime ministers under the Presidents' Salaries Act but the PMO believes this is not necessary.
Former premiers thus will still get their free house and perks by virtue of an office order, which can be overturned by a subsequent government.
Former governors who have been hoping for a pension will have to wait despite a personal request by the President as the state governments are unwilling to bear the cost.
