| Violence broke out again at Nandigram in West Bengal on Thursday even as the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into Wednesday's police firing that claimed 11 lives.
Police made a lathicharge and fired teargas shells on Thursday to disperse a mob that attacked and set ablaze a portion of the office of the Block Divisional Officer (BDO) and the local CPI(M) office. A police vehicle was also damaged.
Trouble arose soon after Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee visited the injured in the police firing in a local hospital. A mob began attacking the nearby BDO office, forcing the police to intervene.
Ms. Banerjee complained of chest pain and was admitted to hospital for a while before she returned here.
There were reports of attempts by activists of the Trinamool-led Bhoomi Ucched Pratirodh Committee to dig up roads in the area.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the incidents over telephone and hoped that normality would return soon.
Trinamool and Congress workers staged demonstrations here and in the districts in protest against the police firing. Lawyers too expressed their protest outside the Secretariat.
The death toll in Wednesday's violence rose to 14 with the death of three persons in hospital. They were not victims of the police firing, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said.
He admitted that the Government expected some resistance from the locals to police entering the area "but had no idea that the resistance would be so organised."
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the CBI Director to send a team immediately to Nandigram. A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice P.C. Ghosh, passed the order in response to a public interest litigation petition filed by lawyers. It directed the Government to arrange for medical help for the injured.
