| The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Friday withdrew its support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre. The party has four members in the Lok Sabha.
At its Coimbatore zonal conference, the MDMK passed a resolution accusing the UPA Government of neglecting the interests of Tamil Nadu in the various inter-State water disputes and failing to give priority to the proposal for linking of rivers. Acquisition of agricultural land for Special Economic Zones and encouragement to multinationals in retail trade, along with online trading, resulted in the inflation rate touching 6.73 per cent, the resolution read.
After the MDMK severed its alliance with the DMK (prior to the Tamil Nadu Assembly election in May 2006), the party was not invited to any of the meetings of the UPA. The DMK, the major constituent of the UPA from Tamil Nadu, was against the continuance of the MDMK in the alliance. But MDMK general secretary Vaiko had all along maintained that his party was part of the UPA. The MDMK, after declining to be part of the UPA Government in May 2004, had been extending unconditional support so far.
However, its relations with the UPA remained uneasy as its current ally in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK, was a bitter critic of the Centre. Listing the MDMK's grievances against the Centre, the resolution pointed to the "failure" to ensure 27 per cent reservation in education and employment for Other Backward Classes and 33 per cent for women in Parliament.
When Tamils were being subjected to genocide in Sri Lanka, the Centre provided training to the Sri Lankan Air Force and police personnel in India.
