Work orders for road overbridgesoon
The road overbridge project at Tambaram is expected to gain momentum with the Highways department set to start work.
 INDIA , 20-March-2007  3:48:42 AM
The State Government will start its share of the work on a road overbridge (ROB) project at Tambaram, which would ease traffic congestion at the junction of Grand Southern Trunk Road, Velachery Main Road and Mudichur Road, at the end of this month.

A tender has been approved, and work orders would be issued soon, according to State Highways department officials. The project was conceived in 2000-01 under the Gauge Conversion and Railway Works Programme. The railways has started its part of the work.

Apart from avoiding the wait at the level crossing opposite the Hindu Mission Hospital, the ROB would help segregate traffic coming from various directions. According to officials, the elevated rotary model ROB would have four arms providing separate corridors for vehicles heading to Chengalpattu, Velachery, Mudichur and Guindy along GST Road.

While the railways would bear half of the project cost of Rs. 35 crore, the State Government would provide the rest.

The intersection is the busiest in the region, next only to the Kathipara junction. A survey in April 2004 showed that the level crossing witnessed a traffic volume of nearly 3.34 lakh Train Vehicle Units (combined road and rail traffic). If a level crossing witnessed a traffic of one lakh TVUs and above, it has to be replaced with a bridge or a subway, the officials said. Even the limited use subway for two-wheelers and cars constructed at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh by the railways near the level crossing failed to ease the congestion.
