Get ready to pay and park again
The pay and park scheme will be reintroduced in a phased manner at 200 locations on 91 roads in Bangalore.
 INDIA , 21-March-2007  2:45:55 AM
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is likely to reintroduce the controversial pay and park system on select roads in a phased manner from April.

The civic body is all set to make an announcement to this effect in its budget, likely to be presented on March 26. Sources in the BBMP told The Hindu on Tuesday that the scheme would be brought back in a modified manner at 200 locations on 91 roads identified by the traffic police. Parking meters similar to those on Brigade Road and Commercial Street are likely to be installed on most of these roads to avoid harassment by parking attendants, a top official said.

Though the civic body had planned to reintroduce the scheme in last April, it decided to put it off till the term of the erstwhile BMP Council ended in November. "The only possible way to reintroduce it is through the budget. We did not want to do it soon after November and incur public wrath," the official said.

After the former Mayor R. Narayanaswamy scrapped the pay and park system from April 1, 2005, the then Dharam Singh Government had rejected the proposal and asked the civic body to bring back the system.

The Government's direction came after the then City Police Commissioner S. Mariswamy objected to free parking.

Subsequently, the former Commissioner K. Jothiramalingam tabled the proposal to reintroduce the scheme in the BMP council in February last year.

Deferred

But the ruling Congress in the BMP was forced to defer the proposal after members of the Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) differed on the issue.

Then in April last year, the traffic police submitted a list of 91 roads to the BMP where they felt pay and park is essential.

Though a proposal to reintroduce the scheme was included in the budget for 2006-2007, the Council deferred the resolution and set up a committee to study the pros and cons of bringing back the system.
