| The leakage of sewer lines of Government Maternity Hospital running through the Women's College, Koti is responsible for the contamination of water that led to hospitalisation of several students last week.
University engineering department officials who dug the place near the women's hostel found out that the lines passing through the college into the Musi river nearby have been leaking and mixing with the drinking water pipeline. The entire hospital wastage actually runs through the college and the contamination is very high. Devidas, an official of the university overseeing the digging, said that damage was up to 10 feet and the sewage was seeping into the water pipeline running above it.
He said they had placed requests with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and MCH officials earlier to divert the pipelines from other routes but they did not agree citing the natural slope through the college land. He said the damaged portion was being repaired.
Meanwhile, the committee constituted by the University submitted its report suggesting immediate measures to overcome the problem and long-term measures for better hygienic conditions in the hostel and the college. The committee consisting of Sarala, Swarna lakshmi and Gopal Reddy - all professors felt that regular monitoring was must to ensure better facilities to students.
