India is virtually out of the World Cup after crashing to a 69-run defeat to Sri Lanka in their last Group B match at Trinidad on Friday. Chasing 255 and a place in the Super Eights, India was bowled out for 185 runs in 43.3 overs. The only way India can now make it to the next stage is if debutantes Bermuda beat Bangladesh on Sunday, though that looks highly unlikely. Barring skipper Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, none of the Indian batsmen managed to find their feet against a precise and beguile Sri Lankan attack. Muttiah Muralitharan was adjudged Man of the Match. Healthy total Earlier, Sri Lanka was put in to bat and they posted 254 for six in their 50 overs. Zaheer Khan struck the first blow when he had the dangerous Sanath Jayasuriya caught in the deep by Ajit Agarkar for six.
Soon after, Agarkar scalped the wicket of Mahela Jaywardene. The Lankan skipper was caught behind by MS Dhoni for seven.
Sourav Ganguly picked up the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara, caught by Munaf Patel for 15. Opener Upul Tharanga hit a fine fifty and put on 41 runs with Chamara Silva before he was trapped leg before wicket by Sachin Tendulkar. He made 64.
Tilakaratne Dilshan and Chamara Silva put on 83 runs before both of them headed back to the pavillion in quick succession.
Dilshan was caught behind by Dhoni off the bowling of Munaf Patel for 38. Silva too was caught behind off a Tendulkar delivery. He made 59.
Batting collapse India's much vaunted batting order was left in shambles by the Lankan lions, who roared from the word go. Robin Uthappa failed to get going for the third straight match in the World Cup. He was bowled by Chaminda Vaas for 18.
Vaas struck again to remove Sourav Ganguly, caught by Muttiah Muralitharan for seven. Dilhara Fernando then bowled Sachin Tendulkar for naught.
Virender Sehwag put on a 54-run partnership with skipper Rahul Dravid before he fell to the guile of Muralitharan.
