Parties going into cross-voting
Dissident TRS MLAs being showered with rose petals at the Telangana Martyrs' Memorial in Hyderabad on Friday when they came to pay homage
 INDIA , 24-March-2007  1:53:13 AM
The Congress, the TDP and the TRS have begun probing as to how their legislators, one each to be precise, indulged in cross-voting.

Leaders spoke of taking action against the errant legislators, one of whom upset the applecart of TRS, while others almost threatened to do the same to Congress and TDP. All through the counting process that went on till the wee hours of Friday, party managers and candidates were kept on tenterhooks by this phenomenon of cross-voting.

Apart from the controversy over Tanuku MLA Chitturi Bapineedu not being able to cast the second ballot paper, the Congress was also confronted with cross-voting.

On Friday, party managers were wondering as to why Congress candidate Palvai Govardhan Reddy did not secure the nine votes allotted to him. A batch of nine MLAs led by Information Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir had been asked to cast their first preference vote for Mr. Reddy.

Party sources said there were dramatic developments when independent candidate Kasani Gyaneshwar got jittery on learning about the difficulty faced by rebel TRS candidate Mandadi Satyanarayana Reddy in casting his vote. The presence of the BJP MLA P. Dora Babu in the TRS camp only added to his tension.

Mr. Gyaneshwar reportedly approached a Congress MLA from Ranga Reddy district and his distant relative, and secured his support. Accordingly, this MLA marked his first preference for Mr. Gyaneshwar instead of Mr. Govardhan Reddy.

The Telugu Desam camp was not without confusion. Three rounds of mock drills and allotment of code numbers notwithstanding, the party could not prevent a West Godavari MLA from voting in favour of Congress candidate K. Bapiraju. He was allotted for B. Narayana Rao.
