| It will be a placement programme with a difference. Employers will be frisked before entering the campus and armed policemen will be guarding the compound walls outside.
The recruitment will take place amidst tight security.
Welcome to the Madurai central prison where the stage is set for the first-ever campus recruitment drive.
In a novel initiative, the jail authorities will go beyond offering convicts training in acquiring skills: they will provide them jobs after their release.
"Several batches of prisoners have been trained by qualified personnel in job-oriented courses, such as computer operations, herbal medicine and its applications, tailoring, book-binding etc.
"We intend to invite employers in the respective fields and request them to conduct interviews," Deputy Inspector General of Prisons B.M. Ezra, told The Hindu on Sunday.
Prison Superintendent P. Govindarajan said the placement proposal came after prisoners showed interest in taking the courses.
