BJP politicising sealing: Maken
Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken and Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Rambabu Sharma addressing a press conference
 INDIA , 26-March-2007  4:47:40 AM
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of politicising the sealing issue, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken on Sunday claimed that a majority of roads affected from the sealing drive have got immunity after notification of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021.

The BJP was misinterpreting the recent Supreme Court order asking the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to resume the sealing drive from March 28 and misleading traders and the common man on the issue, alleged Mr. Maken at a press conference at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters here.

Only a few properties would face sealing action if the drive resumed. The apex court has asked the MCD to carry out sealing in areas not covered under the new Master Plan. A majority of roads and localities that were facing the sealing action have already been covered under the new Master Plan. "Almost 99.5 per cent of the affected traders have been covered under the new Master Plan," he claimed. Stating that the Supreme Court order makes it clear that there would be "no sealing or punitive action against the commercial establishments on roads, whether notified or not, that have been given relief under the Master Plan," the Congress MP from New Delhi said in a way, the apex court has given approval to the new Master Plan approved by the Congress Government. "The municipal elections this year will be a referendum on the Master Plan for Delhi-2021," he added.

The Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee has asked the MCD to take action against shops running from floors other than ground floor in the mixed land use roads, but the fact is that on majority of the roads, commercial activity is going on only on ground floor which is legal, the Minister claimed.
