| The Supreme Court on Monday declined to interfere with a Madras High Court judgment directing actor Vijayakant to hand over the Andal Azhagar Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai for demolition to pave the way for a grade separator at the Koyambedu junction. A Bench of Justice H.K. Sema and Justice Lokeshwar Singh Panta dismissed a special leave petition, filed by V. Premalatha, wife of Mr. Vijayakant and Managing Director of the mandapam.
It also turned down the plea of senior counsel, T.L. Vishwanatha Iyer, appearing for the petitioner, to grant at least a week's time to hand over the mandapam. Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor-General, R. Mohan said the order should not be interfered with.
The Bench gave the petitioner liberty to approach the High Court for extension of the time limit.
Mrs. Premalatha filed a writ petition challenging the notification for takeover of the mandapam, the surrounding lands and the compensation award. The High Court judgment dated February 23 dismissed the petition rejecting the petitioner's contention of mala fide in the acquisition merely because Mr. Vijayakant had floated a political party.
