AIIMS denies negligence
The family has now threatened to take legal action
 INDIA , 28-March-2007  3:39:5 AM
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has said that the 17-year-old girl who died of AIDS on Sunday was infected with the HIV virus at the time of admission to the hospital.

Screening of blood for deadly diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV, is mandatory in India under the national blood policy.

But according to details given by the Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, the girl came in with Crohn's disease, a gastrointestinal problem on November 2.

She was tested for HIV infection because Crohn's has a link with the immune system. She was found to be positive.

Jyoti also tested positive for Dengue, and was given 20 units of platelets because her condition was critical.

AIIMS administration says they gave the reports to the family and the girl was discharged on November 18.

She was again brought in on March 11 with a respiratory distress. She was given oxygen, and kept in the ICU. She died on March 26.

The papers say the cause of the death was acute respiratory distress, sepsis and refractory shock.

Crohn's disease and the respiratory infection could have been infections contracted due to HIV when the immune system is very low.

Legal action

According to earlier reports, Jyoti suffered a severe bout of dengue in November last year. She was admitted to AIIMS where she was given 20 units of blood.

Once discharged Jyoti began to prepare for her board exams and even took two of her papers. But she fell ill once again and had to be readmitted to AIIMS.

Inexplicably Jyoti tested positive for HIV and died from pneumonia.

"They killed her. It is the blood that they gave which was infected by which she got HIV," said her brother Yogesh Chauhan.

The family has now threatened to take legal action.

The fact that one of the biggest hospitals in the country is involved has raised some serious concerns.
