State-wide bandh tomorrow
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi chairing a meeting at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai
 INDIA , 30-March-2007  4:53:49 AM
An all-party meeting convened at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters here on Thursday resolved to observe a bandh on March 31, "to reflect the sentiments of the people of the State" over the "setback to social justice."

The meeting, attended by all partners of the Democratic Progressive Alliance, asked the Centre to convene both Houses of Parliament to discuss the issue and "take a good decision," in the light of "the privileges of Parliament being taken away" and also to "save the people of the country from the sudden setback to social justice."

Expressing shock over the interim stay of the Supreme Court on the operation of reservation for Other Backward Classes in Central institutions, the meeting requested the main Opposition party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the MDMK and the DMDK to join the bandh.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who rushed from a function organised by a multinational automobile firm outside the city to the meeting convened late in the evening, said he would request the Railways and airlines to suspend operations between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. He clarified that essential services would be exempted and examinations would go on.

The bandh was not against the Supreme Court, he said. "I will not say that this is a planned event. I will not attribute motives," he said in response to a question. He added that he was sad that an order had been pronounced, that some people could imagine as having ulterior motives. But some judgments of the Court have ended up going against the concept of social justice.

When it was pointed out that the people who were affected by the order did not show their displeasure, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had asked E.V.R. Periyar the same question in a different context. "His reply was, `That is why they are backward'."
