Trade, terrorism top SAARC agenda
Trade and terrorism are expected to dominated the 14th SAARC Summit that begins in Delhi shortly.
 INDIA , 3-April-2007  1:34:16 AM
Afghanistan also joins as the the eighth member in the first expansion of SAARC since it was formed 22 years ago.

Among other issues, India is expected to push for improved connectivity among SAARC nations.

"It's a landmark summit in several ways. We see this as a summit which enables the sub-continent to reconnect to itself and to the rest of the world," Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon said.

The United States, China, Japan, Britain and the European Union will participate in the summit as observer nations.

Iran has been approved to join as an observer at the next summit.

"In their assesment, SAARC is important and that's a good thing. Outsiders have begun to take interest in the region as a potential emerging market and shown their readiness to engage more actively," Deputy Director of IDSA Virendra Gupta said.

The focus will be on China as the observers compete for a share of the southasian market.

Japan's Ambassador to India Yasukuni Enoki says,"the future of India, China and Japan are tied. We need to strengthen relations and keep a good balance between the three.

"The simultaneous acceptance is to usher the arrival of a new era. Of course trade is a factor, but behind our basic political structures that govern Asia."

New Delhi plays host to eight heads of state for the first time since 1995.

The inclusion of international observers is a cue that the world is waiting for South Asia to convert the idea of economic integration from just a road map into reality.
