| Staff shortage may hit civic scheme |

| At a time when the Coimbatore Corporation is set to implement a number of major schemes for flyovers, transport systems and waste management, it fears that staff shortage will hit the development process.
The Corporation says it may need an exclusive wing to implement schemes for over Rs.3,000 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Consultants engaged by the Corporation say it needs a separate wing even for solid waste management - one of the nearly 20 schemes under the mission.
The schemes have to be implemented by 2012.
Mayor R. Venkatachalam is worried that many works may be hit if the vacancies are not filled.
The Corporation wants to bring about 24-hour drinking water supply, but distribution and also maintenance of water lines may be affected if manpower is inadequate.
The civic body has also requested the Central and State Governments for control over more than 70 km of highways within the city.
The move is aimed at maintenance of all roads by one agency. A major area of concern for the Corporation is the shortage in the conservancy section. It is set to implement the solid waste management scheme at Rs. 96 crore and this will involve even door-to-door collection of waste. But, against the sanctioned strength of 2,916 sanitary workers, the Corporation has only 2,783. The Mayor admits that the city may need more workers than the sanctioned strength.
The local body has only 27 drivers as against the sanctioned strength of 110. With pressure from councillors not to hand over waste management to private parties, shortage of drivers is bound to hit the transportation of waste from the point of collection to disposal.
The total sanctioned staff strength is 4,618 - spread across engineering, health, accounts and other administrative wings of the Corporation. But, 791 posts in these wings are vacant.
