| With campaigning for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections coming to a close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the stage is all set for casting of votes on Thursday to decide the fate of 2,575 candidates who are in the race for 272 seats in the civic body.
Nearly 60,000 security personnel drawn from the Delhi police and paramilitary forces will be deployed across the city to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.
For the political parties, the elections are of great significance. The Congress is seeking votes in the name of development and has largely had a very positive campaign. Be it work done by the Delhi Government or the recent notification of the new Master Plan for Delhi that has sought to provide widespread relief to the Capital's citizens from sealing and demolitions or the decision to regularise nearly 1,500 unauthorised colonies, the party has tried to impress upon the voters that its return to power in the MCD is essential for implementation of these developmental plans. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party is already sensing victory and has been targeting the Congress on all fronts. The BJP has accused the Centre of failing to contain price rise and adopting a soft approach towards terrorism, while it has charged the Delhi Government with failure to provide water, power, roads and jobs to the citizens. Moreover, it has accused them both of misleading the people on the issue of sealing and demolitions.
As for the Congress Councillors, the BJP has in its campaign accused them of large-scale corruption and inefficiency. It has even criticised the Congress for recent increases in home loan interest rates, saying that would take housing out of the reach of many.
Before these elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the CPI along with the Jan Morcha, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Nationalist Congress Party had formed a five-party alliance, Pragatisheel Jan Morcha, which is contesting all the 272 seats.
