Tight security has been put in place as Delhi votes for a new civic body.
 INDIA , 5-April-2007  2:20:49 AM
With the ghost of sealing looming large over the electoral fight it is being seen as a prelude to the Assembly polls next year.

A total of 2,575 candidates, 1,261 of whom are independents, are in the fray for 272 seats in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). However, the main contest is expected to be between the ruling Congress and the BJP.

Almost 1 crore voters are expected to exercise their vote for which the Election Commission has set 10,000 polling booths across the city.

While Congress is looking for a face-saver in the Master Plan in the wake of the sealing and demolition drives, the BJP is hoping for a resurgence in the capital through the elections.

The polls will see many firsts, including the doubling of the wards and use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). The number of wards for MCD has increased from 134 in 2002 to 272 in 2007.

Around 9,200 polling officers are be on duty for the Delhi Municipal Corporation polls where EVMs will be in use for the first time.

Tension in some areas

There has been a bit of trouble in a village in south Delhi where voters damaged three EVMs alleging they were malfunctioning.

In the Madanpur Khadar area, voters clashed with the police alleging bogus voting was going on.

The Election Commission has said that eligible voters need to carry their election photo identity card with them.

In case voters have not been issued photo ID's then they can produce other valid identification documents like pan cards, passport or driving license.

No ration cards

However, the Election Commission has clarified that ration cards will not be treated as a proof of identity.

The Election Commission has also declared the day of polling as a public holiday for Delhi government employees.
