BJP heads for landslide victory
The Congress had fielded candidates in all the 272 wards, while opposition BJP contested in 261 seats and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal in 10.
 INDIA , 7-April-2007  2:25:12 AM
The BJP is set to take over the reins of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi as it is cruising ahead of the rival Congress in as many as 140 seats in the 272-member House.

The saffron party has won 10 seats while the ruling Congress emerged victorious in three wards in the elections for which voting took place on Thursday.

Those who won include former Deputy Mayor Arti Mehra (Hauz Khaz) of the BJP. Barring Mayor Farhad Suri (Nizamuddin) almost all the top Congress leaders were trailing.

Sensing a thumping victory in the MCD polls, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party had earlier said that it will create a new record by winning about 200 seats this time.

Delhi BJP President Dr Harshwardhan lost no time in asking Shiela Dikshit to resign as Delhi Chief Minister.

A total of 2,575 candidates, 1,261 of whom are independents, are in the fray for 272 seats in the MCD House. EVMs were used for the first time.

Congress accepts defeat

The Congress was leading in about 30 seats while smaller parties like the BSP and the NCP and independents were ahead in some 30 seats. The trends were available for around 200 seats.

Last time, the Congress had won 108 seats in the 134-member House. The number of seats in the civic body were doubled as a result of the recently-held delimitation exercise.

For the Congress, the defeat comes at a time the party-led state government is facing a lot of heat over rising prices and the sealing drive.

Except for Mayor Suri almost all the top Congress leaders are trailing and in many seats it is smaller parties like the BSP and the NCP even independents who are ahead.

The elections, considered as a curtain raiser to next year's Assembly polls, were held under the shadow of the sealing drive, which saw traders up in arms against the government.
