Boycott hits SSC spot valuation
Teachers agitating at a spot valuation centre at Kazipet in Warangal
 INDIA , 9-April-2007  2:28:37 AM
The SSC spot valuation work that began on Sunday was affected, with a majority of 26,000 teachers across the State boycotting it, even as Government said it was ready for talks.

At several places, hundreds of teachers were arrested for trying to prevent others from attending valuation duty. Police lathicharged the agitators in Ongole when a teacher and her husband were beaten up after the former attended the work. Among those arrested at Nizamabad was P.Venkat Reddy, president, Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union.

Tension prevailed at the venues of the spot valuation with members of Joint Action Committee of Teachers Organisations (JACTO) preventing teachers entering the halls. The call for the boycott was given by JACTO demanding among others, unified service rules.

In the State capital, leaders and members of the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation and Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union staged demonstrations at Kakatiya High School, Mehdipatnam and Holy Family School, Trimulgherry and raised slogans in support of demands that include unified service rules.

B. Mohan Reddy, MLC and vice-president, All-India Federation of Teachers' Organisations, N. Narayana of UTF and Lakshman of STU were among those who took part.

Contingency plan

School Education Director S. Balasubramanyam said only 3,500 teachers attended the work. The Government would watch the situation for two days and implement a `contingency plan', roping in private unaided teachers, retired instructors and `vidya volunteers'.

"We are ready with the list," he added. Appealing to teachers to end the boycott in the interest of students, he said the School Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi was willing to hold talks. K. Narayana, State CPI secretary, and and STU leaders K. Narasimha Reddy, P. Subba Reddy, MLC, and A.Laxman condemned the arrests.
