| President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday appealed to the people "to take keen interest in the message that radiates from the Siddaganga Math."
Addressing a gathering of over two lakh people after inaugurating the 100th birthday celebrations of Shivakumara Swamiji of the math, Dr. Kalam said the swamiji had been working for the people after his initiation into sanyas 77 years ago. "It has been an intense tapas," he added.
Poem
The President composed a poem in English, "The radiant message from Siddaganga Math", and asked nearly 8,000 students of the math to recite it.
It was also translated into Kannada by writer G.R. Channabasappa and rendered by Kasturi Shankar.
The message that emanated from the math, Dr. Kalam said, was one that "exhorts each of us to work hard, gain knowledge and share our knowledge with others."
Commendation
Expressing happiness over the presence of a large number of people for his 100th birthday celebrations and acknowledging the praises heaped on him by Dr. Kalam and other dignitaries, the swamiji said that it was a "commendation of the good work that is going on in the Siddaganga Math". The swamiji said that he hailed from an illiterate farmer's family.
It was the plague that forced him to seek shelter in Siddaganga Math for six months. It was here that he got an opportunity to know the real meaning of life, the swamiji said.
