Delhi airport handles twin emergencies
 INDIA , 9-April-2007  10:20:41 AM
It was a day of close call for Air India on Monday with 223 passengers and a crew of 25 having a narrow escape when two of its aircraft made emergency landings at the IGI Airport in the span of few hours severely disrupting air traffic.

No one was injured in the two incidents, which involved an Airbus A-310 coming from Bangkok and a Boeing 767 originating from Dubai. The problems related to the landing gear.

In the first incident this morning, the pilot of the Airbus with 169 people and a crew of 14 on board reported problems in its under-carriage.

The carrier's Shanghai-Bangkok-Delhi flight (AI-349) landed after it developed problems in its under-carriage.

The pilot of AI-349 tried twice to land the place between 6.30 and 7 am on Monday.

The plane's landing gear had jammed and the wheels were not coming out. Pilot warned Air Traffic Control twice that he may have to do belly landing.

On the third attempt the plane landed safely on the wheels at 7.45 am (IST). All the 169 passengers on board were taken out of the aircraft after it landed.

"We had reached Delhi by 5.30 am but when they tried to land, they couldn't. Later we were told that there was some technical problem. We were told about emergency landing measures. Everyone started worrying," said a passenger.

While the aircraft was being towed away to taxiway, its nose-wheel capsized and got bogged down.

The plane blocked the runway for more than five hours before being finally towed away after 1 pm (IST).

Another incident

Even as Air India officials were trying to find out what went wrong another of its aircraft, Boeing 767 from Dubai with 54 passengers and a crew of 11 on board reported a hydraulic problem.

According to reports, the pilot of the Boeing-767 informed the air traffic control about a hydraulic problem in the aircraft.
