| TCS is the largest IT company, employing about 88,000 employees. Of that, nearly a quarter are women, up from about 21 per cent a year back. And TCS is introducing innovative policy measures to make them stay.
"We give them extended leave till about two years. They can start a family and rejoiin at the same post. They are very good resources and it's worth the effort," said S Padmanabhan, Global HR Head, TCS.
Besides TCS, Infosys has built a satellite office in Bangalore for pregnant women and young mothers to help them cut down on travel.
And IBM, which has large operations in India has set up a child care center, and allows women employees to take breaks at different times in their careers.
"The IT companies will continue to take such measure, be it hiring women or putting up sattelite offices. But the talent crunch will still continue to be until a more long term. These will definitely help in the near term," said Nihar Oza, VP, Brics Securities.
According to NASSCOM estimates, women will constitute half the workforce in the industry by 2010, which is already the case in the BPO sector. Clearly it's time for the industry to gear up to be able to attract the best of the lot.
