| The second draft master plan for Chennai proposes satellite townships along Old Mahabalipuram Road, Outer Ring Road and Poonamallee High Road.
The plan was made public on Wednesday.
About 1,700 acres of land is being acquired for this purpose by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board.
Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) vice-chairman R. Santhanam said the Authority would only facilitate the creation of infrastructure by local bodies and not acquire land for the satellite towns. Instead, the idea would be to encourage private investment in these areas.
The plan also proposes to amalgamate smaller local bodies within the metropolitan area to form new corporations. The limits of the Chennai Metropolitan area are to be extended up to Tiruporur and Maraimalai Nagar. The plan has made many changes to Development Control Rules. Multi-storied buildings will now be permitted even outside the city limits. The setback requirements and parking norms have been revised. The permissible built-up area along the MRTS corridor is raised to 2. The objectives outlined in the master plan are to be realised by 2026.
Steps are being taken to save the heritage buildings in Chennai and conserve them. They will be listed and graded. Any additions and modifications to the buildings can only be done after obtaining special permission from the CMDA.
The second draft master plan will be available for public consultation and public opinion will be received for the next three months. The master plan can be downloaded from the CMDA website www.cmda.org. The Tamil version of the draft is likely to be made available within a week.
