| Starting later this year, the State Government, with the support and expertise of the World Bank, will launch an interdepartmental effort to restore the much-degraded Cooum sub basin.
A high-level team of World Bank experts and top PWD officials that undertook an aerial survey of the entire stretch of the river on Friday has given the nod for giving the sub basin top priority under the WB-assisted Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management Project (IAMWARM).
The six-year project, with an outlay of Rs 2,547 crore, will prioritise the modernisation of 63 sub basins in the State. The project will be supported by PWD's Multidisciplinary Project Unit.
In the first year, 12 sub basins, including the Cooum, will be taken up at a cost of Rs 160 crore. The total outlay has been estimated at Rs. 400 crore.
"The restoration planning will start soon, after an analysis of the survey and preparation of estimates. After drawing up an engineering plan, the effort is likely to start in the next few months," a senior PWD official said.
Starting the survey from the Cooum mouth in north Chennai and ending in Takkolam near Arakkonam, the team assessed the spate of encroachments on the riverbank and impediments to the flow of the river.
