| What's shocking is that the impersonation went undetected for two years.
The convict, Mani, was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder in Tirunelveli 13 years ago. When he was out on bail, his conviction was confirmed by the Madras High Court.
So he came up with a daring exchange offer! He got his brother-in-law, Kumar, to pose as the real convict and surrender before the police. In return he promised to foot the monthly bills of his relative's family.
The identification marks like scars and moles on the body of the accused were replicated by the impersonator. And the game went on for two years.
"Our investigation will centre around who exactly connived in this impersonation case," said NK Senthamaraikannan, SP, Tirunelveli.
Sources in the prison department say the buck ultimately stops at the table of the local police. Whoever is sent to the prison is presumed to be the real offender.
What's interesting is that the impersonator bears no resemblance to the real accused person. So the big unanswered question is how did the local police not come to know much earlier.
It's a point that will have to be thoroughly investigated
