Decent funeral still eludes Delhi
Earlier this week, NDTV reported the lack of burial grounds for children in the capital and how bodies are being immersed in the already-polluted Yamu
 INDIA , 16-April-2007  3:23:33 AM
Although Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had promised that some land will be allotted, nothing has happened so far. A decent funeral still eludes little children.

As per Hindu rituals, the body of a child aged below three has to be either buried or immersed in water.

Though the Kumars had come to bury their child, the appalling conditions at the burial ground made them think twice. The closest option being the Yamuna, they decided to go for it.

Barely 15 minutes later, another family walked in with a stillborn baby. The same process followed.

Families devastated

NDTV spent two days at the burial ground and found that most of the families that came here preferred to immerse bodies.

They told us that it's better to immerse their beloved ones than to bury them, which are later attacked by animals.

"We wanted to bury the baby, but this place is so dirty. So that's why we immersed the child," said Rajender Kumar, Bereaved Family Member.

Krishan Kumar, the caretaker of the burial ground, has inherited his father's profession and says most of the people prefer the Yamuna to the burial ground.

Not that the Yamuna is a cleaner option, but because things at the burial ground are even worse. Though nothing seems to be taken care of, the so-called caretaker says he's at his job.

"We stay here and take care of the burial ground," said Krishna.

No option

In another part of Delhi, far off from the ghats of the Yamuna, many like Gajendra Singh use the land by a dirty nallah to bury their little ones.

"We don't have an option to go anywhere. Many people bury their children here. They don't even come for a second time. There are no burial grounds, so where should we go?" said Gajendra Singh.

Promises for a decent final resting ground for children have been endless, but things haven't moved beyond that.

What seems to have been forgotten is death doesn't wait even if there's no place for burial
