Police doubt Mumbai girl's rape
Investigators now say the girl could have been pregnant even before she was admitted to the hospital
 INDIA , 17-April-2007  1:24:50 AM
A 16-year-old girl claimed she was raped at Mumbai's Tata Memorial Hospital where she had been admitted for cancer treatment.

Investigators now say the girl could have been pregnant even before she was admitted to the hospital.

The girl, suffering from cancer, is six months pregnant and terminally ill. On Saturday night, her parents had filed a police complaint alleging that she was raped by two ward boys while undergoing treatment at the hospital in November last year.

But the police now say the girl's medical reports point otherwise. "Reports show that she could have been pregnant even before the surgery," said Arup Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order.

So will the cops now interrogate friends and family. "They will definitely be apart of investigations," Patnaik added.

No suspect

The police's version is based on tests conducted at two civic hospitals. Officials at Tata Memorial Hospital also insist that the rape did not happen inside their hospital but have promised to co-operate with the police.

"We have handed over the girls reports to the police they will be investigating. We will co-operate with them," said Abu Mani, Chief Administrative Officer, Tata Memorial Hospital.

The Mumbai police say it's not given the hospital a clean chit just yet and it may conduct paternity tests once it has a suspect. The hospital too has launched its own enquiry into the incident.

For the girl's family, her pregnancy comes at a difficult time. They say the doctors have given their daughter just a few months to live.

Her pregnancy and the stigma of rape will make that time even more difficult for her to survive.
