The van that met with an accident at the Agaram unmanned level crossing near Kancheepuram
 INDIA , 17-April-2007  1:35:29 AM
Nine village administrative officers of Vellore district and two others were killed when a train hit the van in which they were travelling, at the Agaram unmanned level crossing near here in the Chengalpattu-Arakonam railway section on Monday.

Around 9-40 a.m., the van driverattempted to cross the track even as the Chengalpattu-Arakonam passenger train was approaching. In the impact, the van was thrown into a ditch.

The nine VAOs were Kumarasamy, Thandavaroyan, Damodharan, Venkatesan, Chellapandian, Duraisamy, Mohan, Nandakumar and Shanmughabharani.

They, as well as van driver Kumar and Parveen Kumar, son of Ramamurthy, a VAO, died on the spot. Eleven others in the van sustained injuries. The VAOs were on their way to Chennai to take part in a rally organised by their Association.

When the van approached Kacheepuram some of them suggested that they visit a temple at Govindavadi Agaram.

The road to the temple runs parallel to the track till the Agaram level crossing. The van and the train were going in the same direction. The van driver tried to cross the level crossing ahead of the train, according to an eyewitness. Four of the 11 injured persons were referred to the Government General Hospital, Chennai and seven others to a private hospital at Vellore.

The bodies were taken to Vellore after post-mortem.

Only six months ago, 17 persons travelling by a diesel-powered autorickshaw were killed after an electrical multiple unit rammed it at an unmanned level crossing at Pudupakkam, 5 km from the Agaram level crossing.

Negligent driving

In Chennai, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu attributed the accident to the negligence of the van driver. The driver misjudged the speed of the train and tried to cross the track, he said.

Talking to newsmen after visiting the injured in the General Hospital, the Minister said Southern Railway was considering converting all unmanned level crossings into manned ones or constructing road underpasses
