| Work on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) up to Velachery will be completed by May 15, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said on Tuesday.
The Minister announced this after reviewing the progress of the work on the Taramani-Perungudi-Velachery line. Only small portions of electrification and track works remained between Taramani and Velachery.
"We have informed the Railways Safety Commissioner to carry out inspection after May 15," he told mediapersons. Currently, the MRTS services operate from Beach to Tirumailai on two lines and between Tirumailai and Tiruvanmiyur on a single line. Bus bays have been provided at some stations.
There are nine stations in the second phase of MRTS: Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasturba Nagar, Indira Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi and Velachery.
The estimated cost of the phase is Rs.733.39 crore. On extending the MRTS line up to St. Thomas Mount, Mr. Velu said the Railways had sanctioned funds for the extended second phase.
