Ghaziabad boy still trapped in pit
12-year-old boy who fell into an open sewer hole in Ghaziabad on Tuesday morning is still trapped inside
 INDIA , 18-April-2007  2:2:41 AM
A 12-year-old boy who fell into an open sewer hole in Ghaziabad on Tuesday morning is still trapped inside.

The rescue operations have resumed on Wednesday morning after they were suspended around midnight but there has been no success in rescuing the boy so far.

Eyewitnesses say the boy fell into the 12-foot deep pit at around 9 am (IST) on Tuesday morning. The pit is connected to a sewage drain that runs for four km and then opens into the Hindon River.

Police officials, who reached the spot soon after the accident, feel the sheer size of the drain is making it very difficult to rescue Aas.

It took a long time to divert the water in the drain, because the drain was so long, said Ajay Mohan, SP, Ghaziabad.

Then an army team from Meerut equipped with oxygen cylinders, masks and other equipment joined the rescue efforts.

The rescue teams pumped out water from the sewer and searched eight manholes in the vicinity but in vain.

No success

The army has criticized local authorities for the delay in providing them with a sitemap of the sewerage and waterlines in the area.

For Aas' parents the wait was getting more terrifying with each passing hour.

We are all praying that he comes back, said Noor Mohd, Aas's brother.

Till late on Tuesday night Aas Mohd could not be located even as the army stepped up operations by calling in an additional 16 men.

Locals say they had lodged several complaints about open manholes in the area and such an unfortunate incident was waiting to happen.

But the district authorities say they had conducted a drive to cap these open manholes and somehow missed this particular one, which Aas fell into.
