BEST sacks striking employees
Citing a court order, the BEST management has sacked thousands of its striking workers who did not turn up for work
 INDIA , 19-April-2007  3:56:42 AM
Citing a court order, the BEST management has sacked thousands of its striking workers who did not turn up for work on Thursday.

In a 2006 order the High Court had said those who run essential services cannot hold the public to ransom. The action is being seen as a tactic to get the unions to agree to a compromise.

This may bring relief to lacks of commuters in Mumbai who have been left in the lurch due to a strike by employees of the city's BEST bus service.

Over 40,000 employees of BEST have gone on a 72-hour strike starting 11 pm Wednesday night. The workers have demanded that the suspension of their dearness allowance or DA be revoked.

They say that the suspension has cost them up to Rs 2,000 a month and employees say this protest strike will extend for 72 hours.

The GM has tried to cut money and closed some accounts. The strike is against this. The BEST chairman has continuously tried (negotiating) but we have not been responsive, said Sharad Rao, Best Union.

Commuters to be affected

BEST operates over 3000 buses in the city and about 45 lakh commuters may be affected by the strike.

But the management has assured that commuters will not be inconvenienced and tough action will be taken against those BEST employees who participate in the strike.

The High Court has put a stay on this and these people have gone against the court. If they go ahead with this illegal strike then we will fire them, said Uttam Khobragade, BEST General Manager.

Along with the Shiv Sena, other workers' unions have also joined the strike.

While the BEST says that the strike is illegal, workers claim this is not a strike but a protest which is within their rights.
