| In a case of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, two automobile mechanics were found dead in an air-conditioned car parked inside a garage at Ayanavaram here on Thursday.
According to the police, Ramu (22) and Madhavan (24) had stayed inside the car on Wednesday after putting up the garage shutters. On Thursday, another mechanic, who came to work and lifted the shutter, found them dead. The dead belonged to Ayanavaram.
The garage on Anderson Road near the Ayanavaram bus terminus was set up recently. A customer had given the Maruti 800 car for servicing two days ago.
An officer in the Forensic Sciences Department said the car must have been idling for more than an hour with the air-conditioner on. That could have led to the engine being deprived of sufficient levels of oxygen needed for proper combustion. The 300 square feet garage lacked proper ventilation and that would have led to the accumulation of lethal quantities of carbon monoxide.
The police sent the bodies to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The viscera was sent to the Forensic Sciences Department for chemical examination.
A case of unnatural death was registered.
Investigating officer Purushothaman said the post-mortem report would be available in a week. Only then would it be known whether the victims had consumed liquor. The police did not find evidence to that effect inside the car.
A case of death due to carbon monoxide inhalation in a car was reported in the city in October last year when three youths, including a software professional, were found dead inside a Hyundai Santro, which was caught in a traffic jam caused by heavy rain on G.N. Chetty Road. Forensic reports said the deaths were due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
In December 2006, three partying youngsters, including a girl, died due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Thiruvananthapuram.
