Trial run on Pamban BG track
A special train of Southern Railway running on broad gauge track on the Pamban bridge
 INDIA , 21-April-2007  1:26:36 AM
The atmosphere was ecstatic. Hundreds of labourers and engineers of Southern Railway rejoiced when the trial run on the Pamban bridge broad gauge track was completed on Friday.

All engineers, including A.K. Sinha, Chief Bridge Engineer, Southern Railway, S. Anbazhagan, Divisional Engineer, Bridges, who made their contribution to the gauge conversion, seemed a little tense during the special trial on the bridge, which connects the mainland with Rameswaram island. But they hugged one another soon after it was completed succesfully.

After a puja, the train started its maiden journey on the bridge at 5.30 p.m. Running very slowly, it went up to the openable part of the bridge and returned to Mandapam station.

"The test run was successful. The deflection level was much less than what we calculated. It means that the bridge is stronger than we expected. We did not come across any problem when the test run was conducted," said Mr. Sinha, who supervised the trial run.

The broad gauge bridge was tested with 120-tonne WDM-2 locomotive based at Erode and two carriages.

"It is a special occasion for me to drive the train on the bridge. I have not noticed any problem," said S. Veeramani, loco pilot.

The stress strain gauges, fixed at 700 points of the bridge to find the stress and deflection level, collected data while the train passed the bridge.

Mr. Sinha said a team of engineers of Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, would carry out the instrumentation study on Saturday and Sunday.

The train would be shunted frequently between Pamban and Mandapam to ascertain the stress and deflection level. After the study, the data would be handed over to the Safety Commissioner, who would visit the Pamban bridge for final verification.

While expressing satisfaction over the progress of the work, Mr. Sinha said minor works would be completed soon.
