Mumbai businessman donates organs
A fifty-year old businessman donates all his organs shortly before he died and his family has pledged to follow him.
 INDIA , 25-April-2007  2:11:22 AM
Shailesh Gandhi based in Mumbai died last week after briefly surviving a liver transplant.

''We donated his kidneys, eyes, skin everything that was healthy. In fact the patients that received the kidneys are doing well. Now our whole family is also planning to donate,'' says Gandhi's sister Dr Pramila Bhatia.

His wife Preetha Gandhi said,''my husband had told our daughter if anything happens to me please make sure all my organs are donated''.

In October Gandhi underwent a sucessful liver transplant in Hyderabad.

But last week Gandhi complained of a headache and collapsed at home.

His family rushed him to the hospital where he was declared brain dead.

''At first we hesitated. Because there's always the hope that he may recover. But then when we realised there's really nothing that can be done we decided to donate his healthy organs,'' Bhatia said.

''One must not wait too long to decide because the organs have to be retrieved within 24 hours. It's like a proper surgery. We consulted all members of the family and then we decided''.

At a time when doctors say they have a hard time convincing families of brain dead patients to donate organs the Gandhi family has set an example.

The family of 15 is now planning on donating their organs a decision supported by their 84-year-old patriarch who's pledged to donate his own body for medical research.
