The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved Reliance's enhanced power tariff for this year.
This means that those living in the suburbs of Mumbai, from Dahisar to Bandra and Sion to Ghatkopar, will spend more on electricity.
As per the revised tariff, those consuming between:
One to 100 units per month will pay 10 paise more per unit
101 to 300 units will pay 20 paise more per unit
301 to 500 units will pay 50 paise more per unit
over 500 units will pay one rupee more per unit.
Reliance claims that 80 per cent of its consumers, that is nearly 21 lakh people, fall in that category that consumes less than 500 units of power.
So their average bill will only go up a maximum of seven per cent. But those consuming more than 500 units will pay 19 per cent more for power.
Reliance claims that this is still less than the 56 per cent hike that BEST announced for consumers in the island city.
