| Amidst stray voices of discontent, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy inducted 17 new members into his Cabinet on Thursday and reshuffled portfolios of several senior Ministers.
At a colourful ceremony held on the sprawling lawns of Raj Bhavan, Governor Rameshwar Thakur administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Ministers. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Assembly Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, Council Chairman A. Chakrapani, Chief Justice of the High Court G.S. Singhvi and other dignitaries witnessed the 40-minute-long ceremony.
The swearing-in began at 7.45 a.m. with Chief Secretary J. Harinarayan calling Galla Aruna to take oath. While 15 Ministers took the oath in Telugu, C. Damodar Raj Narasimha and Maganti Venkateswara Rao preferred English.
APCC president K. Keshava Rao was away in New Delhi, and at least seven Ministers could not attend the oath-taking function. The Ministers are Dharmana Prasada Rao, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Kanna Lakshminarayana, Konathala Ramakrishna, Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao, D.S. Redya Naik and Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao. Almost all the opposition leaders, barring G. Kishan Reddy, BJP MLA, stayed away.
With the expansion, the number of Council of Ministers went up to 41. Andhra region accounted for 18 berths, followed by 17 from Telangana and six from Rayalaseema. Guntur district has four Ministers while Medak, Krishna and East Godavari have three each. After the function, Dr. Reddy was closeted with senior Ministers and the Chief Secretary for over two hours to finalise the portfolios.
Dr. Reddy made extensive changes in the subjects of the incumbent Ministers as many of them were holding multiple portfolios ever since the resignation of six TRS Ministers and M. Satyanarayana Rao of the Congress later. He rewarded his loyalists with key portfolios like housing, animal husbandry and infrastructure development, which Dr. Reddy declared earlier as the growth engines of the economy.
